Life’s Ride

Over my fireplace is the signed lithograph,” Red Horse Rider”, by Donna Howell-Sickles. It pictures a huge red horse bursting off the boundary of the paper. Aboard the horse is a smiling cowgirl holding tight to the reins.

While visiting friends in Wyoming, I read about Ms Howell-Sickles as I rocked on the porch, absorbing the cool air and the mountains. My friend and I went to a studio in Jackson Hole where I saw this painting. It jolted me. I was touched deeply, deeper than I could explain. The red horse looked so strong, and I felt so weak. I had been” thrown off my horse”, so to speak, as my husband had died suddenly only a few months earlier. Life is unpredictable and it can sidetrack you unexpectedly.

I connected with the passion of the red horse. He was bounding off the page. Where was he going? The strength, with which the cowgirl held tight to the reins, and her smile, spoke confidence and self-reliance to me. What a winning combination and I needed their courage and motivation to get back on track. This was my painting. It spoke to me. I listened and brought it home. I couldn’t leave it behind.

An unexpected experience can be one of life’s turns that direct you on a new path. Shortly after the red horse came into my life, I hired a personal coach and with her encouragement and support, I have been illuminated to make changes and choices in my life leading to my new coaching career.
