Now, Not Later
Five years ago this month my husband died of a heart attack. This
past week, my close friend’s husband died suddenly of a heart
attack. Rejoicing in their lives, we know that each was deeply loved
and will forever be a part of us.
AWAKE and know that there are things to do now and not put off
until later. Remember the saying: we never know what tomorrow will
bring. Believe me, it is true.
My years with my husband were short but they were an oasis wrapped
in love. We traveled to foreign lands, had candlelight dinners on
our best china, rode in a convertible and held hands a lot. With
six children from previous marriages, we drew a circle and put God
in the middle, us in the first concentric circle and the children
in the second. Life was good and we filled it to the fullest.
In mid-January, 2006, I made a trip to see my brother with the
marked intention of sharing our childhood “remember when’s”
and working on my life’s timeline. I needed to get people,
dates and events in the correct order; things only we share as he
is the remaining member of my family of origin. What grand, meaningful
conversations we had and drawing in my sister in law, and nephews
added great value. I had been thinking of this for a long while.
I did it now, not later.
When my grandchildren are 8 and 16 years old, I take them on a
trip, just the two of us. Soon, my grandson and I will make a trip
to Washington, DC, to see the respected sights in our Nation’s
Capitol. Getting that on the calendar has been a challenge, but
I prevailed with a lot of flexibility.
All this to say, that making plans now not later makes your life
more fulfilled, avoids heartache from missed opportunity, and can
bring the happiness you seek.
