A Caring Clown
Have you met Dr. Goodwrench?
He brings laughter, joy and compassion to hospital patients, nurses and visitors.
He is a Caring Clown.
Dressed in purple scrubs, yellow clogs, clown face make up, a red nose and
a stethoscope around his neck, he strolls the hospital halls interacting with
humor, good will and a caring friendly attitude. He eases the stress of the
staff, and brings the medicine of laughter and listening to the patients and
family members. He darts quickly into the physical therapy rooms and the cafeterias.
Sporting a lab coat with badges saying, “To save time, assume I know everything”,
and “Eat a prune — start a movement”, he hands out elevator
passes and discharge papers which are actually clown stickers and toilet tissue.
He will also shine shoes with a flashlight and perform nose transplants with
a foam red ball. He says, “The best part is when you get their mind off
why they are here or what’s bothering them”.
Sometimes Dr. Goodwrench gives his bone specialist routine, looking for a funny
bone or lightens things up with soap bubbles. Silliness gives permission to
be silly and soon the patient and family are joining in with laughter.
When he asks permission to enter a room and shakes hands, he sometimes realizes
the patient needs a listening companion. He does that well, too.
Relief from personal burdens comes with the healing power of caring and laughter.
Dr. Goodwrench may be able to open doors that are impossible for family, friends
or health care professionals.
Dr. Goodwrench is my brother and he is the jam on my piece of the toast of
life. He makes it all better.
