A Promise
Fortunately for the women of the world, October is designated “Breast
Cancer Awareness” month. This disease has affected women for centuries.
Cokie Roberts, in her book, Founding Mothers, speaks of George Washington’s
mother dying of breast cancer. Women suffered in private, with little hope and
little knowledge of diagnosis and treatment.
One person’s heart was broken when her sister lost the battle with breast
cancer at 36 years old in 1982. This person promised her sister to help other
women feel supported and receive education about this disease. Nancy G. Brinker
founded the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation in memory of her sister.
She lit a fire under corporations and community leaders to begin the fund raising
efforts that evolved into world awareness, education and advanced research to
find a cure. Hot pink is the recognized
color of support, and donations range from food and toy purchases to running
a race and other events.
Nancy’s vision, with the help of community leaders, families, survivors
and affiliates, has become a reality. She followed her heart, moving from pain
and suffering to positive action that brought awarenss of life saving techniques
and the joy of survival.
As quoted on their web site, “The Komen Foundation is about people —
people who are committed to making a difference to put an end to breast cancer.”
- Is there a promise you have made to yourself or another?
- Can you follow your heart?
- There is power in one person’s passion. What is yours?
- Call me and we will find it.
