Bingo
In January on a cold, cold damp evening, a group from my church went to Austin
Street Center to conduct a bingo night for the homeless people there. Our
intention was to have refreshments and prizes, laughter and fun. And we did.
For that night there were over 400 men, women and children in residence, as
it was so very cold. Statistics say that families are the fastest growing segment
of the homeless. (U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2004) The Dallas Mavericks Foundation,
Dallas professional basketball team, has contributed to a park/playground for
the children there. Think of how you might be instrumental in meeting a need
for the homeless. There are many local organizations and one national one, National
Coalition for the Homeless, committed to creating the changes necessary
to prevent and end homelessness.
Don’t look the other way. Don’t dismiss the plight of the homeless:
Be present.
Initiate action.
Navigate a plan.
Go and do it.
