The Precious Present

Presents are all around us – those we give and those we receive. But are we really present for ourselves and each other? For Thanksgiving, three of my children made plans to be present in my home and I was very excited. Busy in preparation, wondering if it would all get done, I was suddenly stopped by a series of very unsettling events. I became anxious and began worrying, hoping that my flittering about would get the house back to normal quicker. Not! It only made for more confusion.

I failed to give myself the most precious present of all – that of being content, no matter the circumstances. As December, 2007, begins and you become busy, note your feelings of comfort and joy and how you fill your days. Each moment is a precious gift.

To paraphrase Don Miguel Ruiz’s Four Agreements:

  • What are your assumptions about the holidays?

  • Have you done your very best in preparation?

  • Are you taking what is happening around you personally?

  • Is your word impeccable all the time?

“The precious present has nothing to do with wishing…When you have the precious present you will be perfectly content to be where you are…The precious present is not something someone gives to you…It is something you give to yourself…”
