The Stars and Stripes
The Flag of the United States of America was adopted by the Constitutional Congress on June 14, 1777. George Washington wanted a standard that symbolized the Constitution and the Bill of Rights of this new nation; one that each citizen and soldier could honor, respect and protect. It stands for a nation dedicated to courage, liberty and faith and it enfolds American Freedoms: speech, religion, assembly, the press and the sanctity of the home.
Our flag is designed with thirteen alternating red and white stripes and a blue field where a star represents each state. Originally there were thirteen stars and today there are fifty.
Daily, thousands of children and adults pledge allegiance to our flag and our country, honoring the freedoms we have and the trust we hold dear for future generations.
American Patriotism: the spirit displayed when our flag is raised at Iwo Jima, at Ground Zero, at the Olympic Games, and on the moon; when citizens stand and salute; when children sing and orchestras play the songs written about the flag and about America.
