Your Life’s Work
McCartys Pottery, hidden in the small Mississippi Delta town of Merigold, has collectors worldwide including the Smithsonian Museum. Lee and Pup McCarty knew they loved making pottery and in 1954 returned to his hometown to create their ‘simple but elegant’ style using Mississippi clay and original glazes. I have collected McCartys bunnies for 40 years and went to the McCarty’s home/studio for the first time just last month. ‘Alice Bunny’ came home with me. There are dishes, angels, platters, shells, candlesticks and more.
From this humble beginning in a barn in a town of 600 people has come internationally acclaimed masterpiece pottery. Magazine editors, decorators, tourists and hometown folks make their way behind the unmarked bamboo entrance into the oasis of potter’s wheel, showroom and lush garden. The McCartys have been doing what they love.
Check it out and see if there is a vocation there.
